< The PHILOSOP Mailing List [Purpose] --- [Terms of Use] ---[Commands] --- [History] Description PHILOSOP is the oldest internet e-mail list of professional philosophers in the world, with subscribers from a wide variety of countries and institutions, both big and small. PHILOSOP is run by István S. N. Berkeley of the Philosophy program and is based at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, in Lafayette, Louisiana USA. Please direct all inquiries to the listowner and moderator, István Berkeley at istvan@louisiana.edu Purpose The purpose of PHILOSOP is to provide an easy, informal, and fast, way for people interested in academic Philosophy to exchange anything relevant that can be exchanged via the medium of e-mail, and, taking that as given, to keep reasonably large the ratio of utility to volume. By academic Philosophy (or, anyway, its expression in the word) we mean, approximately, the kind of professional writing that is done by people studying (beyond the elementary level), or teaching, in university philosophy departments. Texts satisfying that criterion might be of many different kinds: work in progress, comments thereon, advertisements for conferences, newsletters, journals, or associations, job postings, announcements of other mailing lists and philosophically relevant WWW pages. Terms of Use Please use common sense when posting to PHILOSOP. Posting which may be considered offensive should be avoided. In case of doubt, or if you are unsure whether a posting is appropriate for the list, ask the list moderator's opinion prior to posting. Please note however, regulations governing the machines which PHILOSOP runs upon specifically prohibit any use of the list for commercial purposes. For a detailed list of commands and options available through Mailman, please see The GNU Mailman List Member Manual, located at, http://list.org/mailman-member/ Brief History In September 1995 PHILOSOP moved from York University, where it was run by Nollaig McKenzie to The University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was at this time that the server software changed to Majordomo. Also, István S. N. Berkeley took over the task of running the list. In September 1996, the list again moved, this time to its current location. At the time this institution was known as The University of Southwestern Louisiana. However, in 1999 the name was changed to the current one of The University of Louisiana at Lafayette. PHILOSOP ran under majordomo software until September 2017. To post a message to all the list members, send email to philosop@lists.louisiana.edu. You can subscribe to the list, or change your existing subscription, in the sections below.
Subscribing to Philosop
Subscribe to Philosop by filling out the following form. You will be sent email requesting confirmation, to prevent others from gratuitously subscribing you. Once confirmation is received, your request will be held for approval by the list moderator. You will be notified of the moderator's decision by email. This is also a hidden list, which means that the list of members is available only to the list administrator. Your email address:   Your name (optional):   You may enter a privacy password below. This provides only mild security, but should prevent others from messing with your subscription. Do not use a valuable password as it will occasionally be emailed back to you in cleartext. If you choose not to enter a password, one will be automatically generated for you, and it will be sent to you once you've confirmed your subscription.
